Artist Statement
by

McKay Larsen

As a young boy, I was fascinated with nature, and loved spending countless hours observing a myriad of living things. Inspired by the endless beauty of the earth, I created drawings and paintings to express my intrigue with nature. Art was a tool to express the feelings and emotions encountered in nature.
My formal art education helped me understand new ways to articulate my experiences and emotions. After studying art at Brigham Young University, and receiving a Bachelor's (BFA) and Masters (MFA) in Fine Art, I have enjoyed teaching students and expressing art with added perspective.
I am also intrigued with the impressionists, expressionists and creators of abstract art. I have eclectic tastes in art, and enjoy a myriad of genres. We can learn so much from a variety of artists represented today, and artists throughout the ages.
Why do I create art? Art and photography are tools to express what I see and feel. I am amazed by the aesthetics and endless wonder provided by all the creations around us, from the smallest organisms to the vast variety in the oceans, forests and galaxies. I want to share with everyone the sublime encounters, joy and wonder I have experienced with nature. Art is an extension of my experience in nature and my surroundings. Seeing and experiencing the fascinating and inspiring wonders of this world becomes a catalyst for my work and expression.
From my early observations, I came to know that there is a Creator. This world, all people, and the universe displays His awesome creations. The endless variety captivates my attention with wonder, enlivens my senses, and instills a deep reverence for our omniscient, kind, and loving God. The joy of composing art that reflects His light, which uplifts viewers and enthralls their senses, enhances my motivations to paint and create.
In addition, I have been inspired by many of the great artists and composers of the past, including Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Jan Vermeer and Carl Bloch, along with many of the wonderful musical composers, such as Beethoven, Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and many others. I particularly enjoy the musical creation of Vivaldiā€™s Four Seasons. It enlivens all my senses through sound, and I hope to help individuals and audiences positively enliven their senses similarly, through the visual arts.
